Hello beautiful human,
It’s Friday, free day, Freya’s Day. If you’re like me, you’re reaching the end of a week with some wins, some losses, and a few things still unfinished that keep dragging themselves from one to-do list to the next.
It’s okay. It’s Friday, a day associated by name with love, feminine energy, and magic. Yes let’s have some of that please.
I wanted to write this morning about simplicity and simplifying, which felt like a good idea. Fascinatingly, as I searched for quotes on simplicity, the first page was all quotes by (white) men through history. That surely isn’t coincidence. How many lives of simplicity and aesthetic reduction are made possible by the labor and support of how many others who got stuck doing so many of the humdrum workaday tasks?
Once you know Thoreau’s mother did his laundry weekly while he was out there keeping his journals at Walden, you never really read him again in the same way.
So, I’m a little soured now on simplicity as a theme. Maybe there’s a different word I want?
What about spaciousness? What if, just for today, we could invite a sense of spaciousness as we take care of all those persnickety details and tasks? What if we could breathe and stay connected to the ground and to ourselves? What if we could take breaks? What if we could explore the difference between speed and efficiency?
How do these words land for you, in your body? Take a moment and explore simplicity, spaciousness, acceptance, release…maybe other words come to mind as you center and listen?
“Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius — and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction.”
― E.F. Schumacher
“A child of five could understand this. Send someone to fetch a child of five.”
― Groucho Marx
Sometimes the internet is a wonderful thing. Noodling around thinking about simplicity and what I was really trying to say led me to this by a writer I didn’t know before. brings up the related themes of emptiness and calling in the new. Emptying out a bit on a Friday feels like a really, really good idea to me…shall we try it?
My win for the week, besides finding new writers, is discovering that I can order salad when we get take out pizza and I actually enjoy it. Is it just me or are pizza places upping their salad game?
What’s a win of the week for you?
Today’s invitation: Take a few minutes today to honor the week. Empty, let go, release what you can. Enter the day lighter and breathing more easily.
Looking to grow the connection and the energy? Here are some possibilities:
Your attention and time are the true gifts. Thank you. xoS
Thank you Sarah for highlighting a theme from my latest post, “Become the Empty Vessel.” I am happy to hear my words resonated and you are practicing a little emptying out this weekend ✨💚✨I love that you are inviting your community to do the same. Yes!
