Hello beautiful human,
Yesterday was a lovely and deeply needed day of writing and playing around in the kitchen. The only slight mark against the whole thing was the movie we chose to close the day with, Ocean’s Twelve. I don’t know if you’ve watched Ocean’s Twelve. I never had. I’ve seen Ocean’s Eleven several times and consider it a nearly perfect caper movie. it’s a joy.
Ocean’s Twelve is what happens when someone tries to catch lightning in a bottle, again.
And that’s such a recognizeable urge, isn’t it? Haven’t we all at times succumbed to trying to repeat our successes, trying to find that same energy, again?
It’s a very human impulse, when we have a great day or a phenomenal experience, to want to do it again, just like that. To repeat the experience. It almost never works. There’s a bigger point here than just a couple of movies with all-star casts headed up by Clooney and Pitt. True magic can’t be forced. And in that notion, there’s also an invitation. No matter how routine our lives seems to be, we can find ways to come fresh each time, not trying to repeat ourselves but in the moment knowing we’re new to the day, new to the project all over again. I think actors in long running plays must know this. The lines are new tonight. Formula One drivers must know this. The track conditions will be different. Cooks in the kitchen must know this. The seasonings need attention. Parents of toddlers definitely know this. Yesterday’s performance doesn’t matter a bit. Enter stage left today all over again, new to the material, ready for a brand new audience with its own moods and ideas.
Every day is a brand new audience with its own moods and ideas. We might recognize our fellow cast members: families, coworkers, traffic patterns, but nothing and no one is ever exactly the same two days in a row. We’re deeply enmeshed in the energies that swirl around us, from memos at work, to the messages from our gut bacteria and the flares of the sun. If we can stay alive and curious as to the possibilities each day presents, remembering we never step in the same river twice, we’ll be all the more ready for opportunities and shift. We’ll be better equipped to ride the currents of change…which come, regardless.
Maybe that seems like a big ask on a regular old Thursday. Maybe you’re just trying to get through the week. I get it. So here’s a smaller, very small, micro idea: what is one thing you might notice today, that you didn’t notice yesterday?
Just that. Just one little moment of noticing. That’s the ask. The rest will come with practice.
And it’s all practice.
